Carl F. Bailey
The following biographical sketch was created at the time of induction in 1988.
Carl F. Bailey is a former president and chief executive officer of South Central Bell Telephone Company with offices in Birmingham, Alabama.
Mr. Bailey is a native of Birmingham, having been born in that city on September 17,1930. He is the son of Carl and Marvel Bailey.
He began his career in the field of communications upon accepting a position with Southern Bell Telephone Company at New Orleans in 1952. His responsibilities consistently increased with the company as he was placed in managerial positions in Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama. In 1968, Mr. Bailey was moved to AT&T's Federal Relations Office in Washington, D.C.
He returned to Birmingham in 1971 as assistant to the president of South Central Bell. He received regular, rapid promotions by the company which resulted in his having been elected president and a member of the Board of Directors of South Central Bell Telephone Company in 1982.
Mr. Bailey is recognized by his peers as a leader and a producer as is evidenced by his selection in October of 1987 as Chairman of the United States Telephone Association.
Carl Bailey is a graduate of Auburn University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He did additional academic work at Dartmouth College.
Busy individuals seem to find time someway from their regular occupations to be good citizens and good neighbors. Carl Bailey is no exception. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Birmingham-Southern College, a member of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, a Director of Delchamps, Inc. and a member of the Board of Directors of SouthTrust Corporation of Birmingham.
Carl Bailey is married to the former Jean Jones and they are the parents of two sons. The Baileys attend Canterbury Methodist Church in Birmingham.
